Lil June Afro Punta: The Garifuna Artist Bringing Punta Music to New Audiences

Growing up, I would hear a little bit of punta at different house parties. It was a sound that connected communities, something familiar and alive, even if I didn't always know where it came from. As I got older, I began to understand the deeper history behind it: a cultural expression born from African and Indigenous roots, shaped by the Garifuna people, with roots in Honduras and Belize, carried through generations as a form of celebration, resilience and survival.

Cultura Fest 2025

When I learned about Lil June Afro Punta and his unique approach to the sound, I was immediately drawn in. When he performed at Cultura Fest, he brought incredible energy. His performance carried history, identity and the intention of creating something new while honoring where it came from.

Born Junior Jose Alvarez in Brooklyn, New York, with family roots in Honduras and Belize, Lil June is part of a new generation carrying the Garifuna sound forward.

For years, Garifuna culture and punta music existed on the margins of the mainstream. The traditions and stories were carried within communities, but often without the visibility they deserved. No major platform. No industry infrastructure. Just people keeping something sacred alive.

Lil June Afro Punta is creating his own lane.

Through Afro Punta, he built a modern evolution of traditional sounds layered with contemporary production, Garifuna rhythms fused with Afro-Latin and Caribbean influences. It is a bridge between generations, keeping the foundation intact while expanding what the sound can become.

He started making music at the age of 8 in Brooklyn, learning by watching his father and the artists he admired. One of his most formative memories was playing Garifuna drums alongside legendary artist Jimmy Suazo, just a month before Suazo passed away in April 2004. That experience stayed with him.

His music career did not begin with major industry support or large resources.

He has performed without guarantees, traveled with limited resources and sacrificed comfort to continue building. He invested in himself when no one else would, because he believed the culture deserved to be heard.

He is not waiting for permission.

As a singer, songwriter, producer, director and filmmaker, he has built an entire ecosystem around the music, production, visual storytelling, distribution, branding, all under his independent label Unity Soul Company. A platform that highlights his roots, supports other artists and brings visibility to a culture that deserves recognition.

Lil June Afro Punta is now taking that vision on tour, bringing punta music to diverse audiences across the United States from intimate spaces to larger stages.

His latest album:

Afro Punta 4 Rich Or Thriller Edition, is out now on all streaming platforms.
