Pedro Gomez was introduced to the drum at the age of 13 during a neighborhood rumba circle in San Francisco’s Mission District. From that moment on, his relationship with music became deeply rooted in community, culture, and the African and Indigenous diaspora—where rhythm serves as both expression and healing.
As the Creative Director of Batuki, Pedro weaves together Afro-diasporic traditions through percussion, movement, and collective participation. He has studied under renowned masters including Jorge Alabé, Gamo da Paz, Giovanni Hidalgo, John Santos, Malonga Casquelourd, Bongo Sidibé, Lalo Izquierdo, and Baba Duru, gaining deep knowledge of the rhythms and cultural foundations of Afro-descendant communities.
His professional career includes recording and performing with artists such as Jaguar Wright, Eric Roberson, Al B. Sure, Bayonics, Bebel Zahara, and Olodum. These experiences continue to shape his work as a musical director and educator.
With over 25 years of teaching experience in the United States and abroad, Pedro believes that musical expression is a powerful pathway to healing and empowerment. Through Batuki, he is committed to passing on traditions that uplift young people, families, and communities—creating spaces where joy, culture, and self-expression can thrive.
